This salad, also known by different names such as Delight pistachio, requires only a few minutes to put together. Let it cool in the fridge to develop flavors and you have a side dish or dessert that anyone who will like!

Why is it called Watergate Salad?

If the name “Watergate” makes you remember a certain presidential scandal, you could ask you why in the world this salad similar to Ambrosia has the same name. Well, both the scandal and this salad have links with the famous Watergate Hotel.

This salad was created by Kraft with the name Pistacchio Pineapple Delizia, but its resemblance to Watergate Cake meant that people began to request it with this name. This dish actually gained popularity during the Watergate scandal! Read more about it Here.

My family always calls this classic “Green Fluff” recipe. Of course, we also eat “orange fluff” and “pink lanugine”, so we are not exactly creative with our choices named. But describes this green and soft dish!

Collect the following objects to make this salad soft and sweet:

  • Mix of pistachio instant pudding
  • Blocks of canned pineapple (don’t drain the juice: you will need it!)
  • Maraschino cherries, drained
  • Mini Marshmallow
  • Chopped walnuts
  • Fresh mounted whipping (defrosted) or my recipe for stabilized whipped cream
  • Chopped pistachios

How to prepare the Watergate pistachio salad

This sweet outline is so easy to prepare, requesting only a few simple steps:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the mix of pudding and pineapple pieces, including juice!
  2. Mix the chopped cherries and walnuts, then gently fold the miniature marshmallows and curb the whisk.
  3. Cover the bowl with plastic casing and place the watergate salad in the refrigerator for 2 hours. This allows flavors to combine and deepen the best results.

Keep the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. Make sure to mix before serving how ingredients can start separating.

Can I prepare waterfall salad in advance?

YES! Feel free to do the night before you need it. It is better to appreciate within the first day or 2 that is made, so you shouldn’t do it in advance. Making the night before would be ideal.

Can I use a different pudding mixture flavor for this recipe for watergregate salad?

Of course, even if the flavor will be slightly different. If you can’t find the pistachio pudding, you can instead use vanilla. Just make sure to add many chopped pistachios to the top. If you still want the green color, you will have to add a few drops of green food coloring when mixing the pudding mix with pineapple and juices, as it was the mix of pistachio pudding that gave it its green color.

Can I use chopped pineapple instead of pieces of pineapple?

Absolutely, make sure it is about the same quantity (20 ounces) and make sure to add the juices from the can, just like with the pieces of pineapple.

What can I use chopped walnuts instead?

If you don’t like the creaks in your fluffy salads, feel free to omit them. If you simply don’t like walnuts, chopped pistachios would be the best substitute.
