No sooner had I mentioned that Fethiye’s weather had cooled in last month’s Fethiye news roundup than temperatures and humidity rose again and it was as if full summer had never left us.

Waves crashing on Çalış beach on the last day of the month

So let’s try again for the month of October…

Because I’m sitting here and there’s a nice cool breeze, the temperature is in the low 20s and it’s bright, clear and sunny.

Glorious October weather!

On the last day of September we had strong winds at sea which gave us some beautiful waves crashing along Çalış beach.

As soon as the intensity of the scorching summer heat leaves us, festivals and events almost overlap and it can be difficult to keep up with what’s going on.

Towards the end of September we had:

  • The beginning of Turkish Super Enduro Championships on the Esenköy motocross track
  • A small festival in Incirkoy village with local and international folk dancers
  • THE 2nd Fethiye International Festival of Gastronomy, Culture and Friendship which aims to promote friendship between Greece and Türkiye. This year there were guests from places like Rhodes and Mykonos, as well as local chefs and producers. The events took place in Kayaköy and on the main Beşkaza Meydanı in the center of Fethiye.
  • THE Fethiye Folk Dance Festival. The event took place on the last day of the month at the Özer Olgun Cultural Center, on the edge of the town square, and featured local and international folk dancers.

All of the above happened in the space of 5 days!

And throughout October, events are a little more sports-oriented.

Search for running events like:

  • THE Babadag Ultra Trail which takes place in Ölüdeniz with a route that passes through Kayaköy.
  • THE Fethiye Sportfest which includes: a half marathon and 10km and also a Gran Fondo, an open water swimming event and the Fethiye SUP Cup. Most of this also takes place in Ölüdeniz.
  • Race for life – Fethiye Race For Life fun run

And then, of course, we have the annual Fethiye and Ölüdeniz Air Games.

Always the perfect completion of the summer season.

This year’s event will take place October 23-27.

He must have calmed down a bit because we thought it best to start cooking again and prepare different international and Turkish recipes.

Nothing too strenuous. September might signal autumn, but Fethiye’s temperatures remind us otherwise!

Cut your baked potato and courgette pancakes as you like

It’s been a while since we’ve made this and it’s a great dish to slice and keep in the fridge for snacks and meals.

I prepared a tray of delicious fırında mücver: zucchini pancakes cooked in the Turkish oven!

We have now updated the recipe with more accurate measurements and even some nutritional information.

As far as favorite Turkish dishes go, Barry has been busier than me in the kitchen.

A couple of batches of homemade hummus and he also treated us to a large plate of sucuklu yumurta!

Very naughty but cute!

When it comes to seasonal dishes in this area of the woods, this is the time when the huge kapya biber (long red peppers) and late summer cherry tomatoes are present in all the local markets.

Make yourself some breakfast sauce

This is when people make salça (tomato paste and red pepper paste) and jars of kahvaltılık sos, a great homemade ketchup.

It is also the time when we also see “turşuluk” vegetables in the markets.

These are the treats you buy to load up your big jars to make turşu, Turkish pickled vegetables.

Is there such a thing as too many pickles?

We will confess that we have not yet managed to do any of the above this year, but we will certainly do so soon, when it is cool enough.

However, we celebrated another seasonal autumn fruit: the apple!

These really easy and quick puff pastry Turkish apple tarts – elmalı tart – taste great and can be eaten as a dessert with cream or ice cream.

Or just grab one to eat as a sweet snack.

Wow, it was a foodie September, wasn’t it?

Our news article was also added to the blog this month Fethiye street foods – the Street Food area of Fethiye.

We love the injection of color that the street food vans have given

We went there a couple of weeks ago, en route to the Tuesday market, and walked around them all before grabbing a bao bun.

Plenty of famous Turkish street food is also available on vans there and it’s a great addition to Fethiye’s already diverse bar and restaurant scene.

Also on the blog, in September, we updated our article on the recently restored Kariye Mosque in Istanbul.

There’s a lot to see and do in that area of the city, so it’s worth getting there next time you’re in town.

We wish we could give you joyful news, but we can’t. On the 29th the team managed to draw 3–3 at Altay.

Let’s hope this is a turning point for them.

Here’s what the current ranking looks like. And these are the previous results and the next matches.

Away from everything Fethiye has to offer, random news attracts attention and we love sharing it here.

Here’s what struck us in September.

Salda Gölü – Salda Lake – in the country’s Burdur province is famous for its otherworldly features.

At the annual meeting of International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) which this year was held in Busan, South Korea, was joined by Salda Gölü World Geological Heritage List .

The sites added to the list are those deemed to be of greatest scientific value: the world’s best demonstrations of geological features and processes.

Salda joins the rock formations of Cappadocia (the famous fairy chimneys) and the travertines of Pamukkale.

Pamukkale travertines are already on the list

Imagine going out into your fields to plant some vine saplings and suddenly coming across an ancient buried mosaic: a huge floor mosaic from the Roman era!

This is what happened this farmer in Elazığ, in the east of the country.

Surely some motorists had to do a double take if they looked while crossing the Bosphorus Bridge recently.

This Estonian guy I managed to cross the bridge – via a slackline. I even managed to bring a Turkish flag!

As usual, we are already a few days away from the start of the new month.

We will have more friends in the next few weeks and will also have a few unscheduled days.

Let’s see what the rest of the month has in store for us…
