For a change from the classic apple pie, try this Rustic apple and cranberry pie.
We tried this dessert that was relatively quick to prepare and we really liked it. Personally, I love the cakes with apples, but here it is a less sweet version with a slightly spicy touch.
For the dough cakeyou can use your favorite recipe, or the one bought in the store, the result will be equally good.

Cooking time
30 minutes
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 1/5 tsp. spoonful of honey
- 1 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
- 3/4 cup fresh cranberries
- 4 Cortland apples, peeled and sliced
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 homemade or store-bought pie shell
- Powdered sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- In a saucepan, heat the water, sugar, honey, lemon juice and cinnamon; over medium heat. When the sugar has dissolved, add the apples and cook for 5-7 minutes. Remove the apples using a spoon and place them in a bowl.
- Add the cranberries to the pan and cook until they pop. Remove the blueberries with a spoon and add them to the bowl with the apples. Leave the liquid in the pan for 1 to 2 minutes to thicken into a syrup.
- Spread the tart shell on a baking tray, then place the apple and cranberry mixture in the centre, leaving a 3-4 centimeter outline of free dough. Fold the edges towards the center. Drizzle lightly with syrup.
- Place in the center of the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and place the pan on a rack to let the tart rest for 5-10 minutes, then add icing sugar if desired.
