Ingredient recommendations for instant rice

Rice – In the Instant Pot you can prepare white, brown, wild, basmati, jasmine or any variety of dry rice. Always rinse the rice in a fine mesh strainer until the water runs clear. This removes debris and excess starch that would make the rice sticky and chewy.

Waterfall – Use water or any type of broth.

Condiments – Add fresh or dried herbs or your favorite seasonings to the rice in step 1.

How to Cook Rice in an Instant Pot

Make rice in the Instant Pot just once and you’ll never go back to the stovetop method again!

  1. Place the rinsed rice, water, oil, and salt in the Instant Pot (according to the recipe below).
  2. Close the lid and cook on HIGH for 4 minutes.
  3. Allow a natural release before fluffing with a fork.

Use the settings as indicated in the recipe below or refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for your model. But keep in mind that this setting is for long-grain white rice, and other varieties will cook differently.

Rice/water ratio

  • Long Grain White: 4-6 minutes on HIGH + 15 minutes of natural release. 1 cup rice to 1 cup + 2 tablespoons water.
  • Brown rice: 22-25 minutes on HIGH + 15 minutes of natural release. 1 cup rice to 1 cup + 2 tablespoons water.
  • Wild rice: 30 minutes on HIGH + 15 minutes at natural release. 1 cup rice to 1 1/4 cups water.

  • Rinse the rice and pour it into the Instant Pot with water, oil and salt.

  • Lock the lid and set the Instant Pot to Manual High for 4 minutes.

  • Allow to release naturally for 15 minutes.

  • Release any remaining pressure, fluff the rice with a fork, and serve.

  • Long grain white rice: 4-6 minutes at high pressure + 15 minutes at natural release
  • Brown rice: 22-25 minutes at high pressure + 15 minutes at natural release (Brown rice requires more water than white rice. Add 1 cup rice, 1 1/3 cups water)
  • Wild rice (not a blend): 30 minutes at high pressure + 15 minutes at natural release (Wild rice requires more water than white rice. Add 1 cup rice and 1 2/3 cups water)

Natural release: Once the cooking cycle is finished, leave the Instant Pot undisturbed (do not open the lid or valve). The pressure will naturally begin to release. At the end of the 15 minute natural release, manually release any remaining pressure (by opening the valve – this may vary by model). There should be very little pressure left.
